Magical writing, incantations and the magic of will. So, how to use magic.
Shortly after the ark crew appeared in Skarrivy, fascinated by the new arrivals, and especially the Hollow, Princess Nihara decided to offer her a tour of the city. She accepted the offer with pleasure. Having been constantly enchanted by the new world, its intriguing level of development and culture since the day they landed. Especially it was an offer from the princess herself. During the walk, Hollow asked many questions. However, one caused a special flash of passion in Nihara’s eyes. It concerned magic, which the princess did not fail to tell her about in detail…
There are three main methods of magical communication. Communication that enables us, with the help of mana crystals, bringing from the magical dimension to the world as well as manipulating magical elements and matter. The first is magical writing. The second is incantations. And the third is the magic of will.
Learning always begins with magical writing. It consists of the runic alphabet, runic writing and magic circles. Runes are divided into different categories, for example some of them are responsible for summoning individual magical elements and matter from the magical dimension and others for controlling them after finding themselves in our world etc. They then create runic writing, which is used to write down basic and medium-complex spells. Then runic writing is used to create magic circles, which are responsible for the most complex and powerful spells.
Single runes are most often used to create fire, e.g. to light a campfire. However, they do not have many applications due to the possibility of summoning only a specific magical element, unformed matter or not causing any effect in the case of other runes. It is worth mentioning here that the summoned elements and matter return to the magical dimension after some time. As a result, there is no point in summoning, for example, iron to later make swords from it using the traditional method.
Runic writing is used to write various spells of low or medium class. These spells have limitations on their power, imposed by their pointiness, because in their case, magical elements or matter, come to our world through invisible, micro portals. Located on a small surface, which limits their flow. The advantage of these spells, however, is their speed and inconspicuousness.
Magic circles usually consist of many circles/layers written in runic script, most often activating one after another from the outside to the inside or vice versa. They are used to cast spells of high and master class. In their case, unlike the runic scripts themselves, one cannot speak of discretion. Because the basis of magic of magic circles is using them in the form of portals, which is associated with the ease of noticing an incoming attack. Another disadvantage is the speed of casting spells, which is varied but always inferior to spells of the previous type. A huge advantage, however, is the power of spells of this type, limited only by the surface of a given circle and the user’s mana resource.
Single runes, like runic notes and magic circles, are made using various materials, most often consisting of crushed magic crystals. The number of uses of the note before destruction depends on their content. From magic scrolls and tattoos that are disposable, to those made of magic crystals themselves that have many uses and the ability to regenerate them without destruction or corruption. Their activation, on the other hand, is done by the will of the user assigned to them. Having the appropriate amount of mana and being within the range of the activation ability corresponding to it.
After gaining the appropriate experience in learning and using magical writing, it is time for something more practical. Namely, incantations. Their essence is the lack of need to use physical magical writings, which at this stage the user learns by heart. Memorization itself, however, is not the greatest difficulty, although unlike simple spells, memorizing powerful magic circles is a great challenge. The real difficulty is the fact that in this case, the physical runes written in one way or another do not react with the magical dimension, but the user himself and their image in his mind. Therefore, at this stage of learning, the user already receives a mana crystal strong enough to be able to feel the connection with the magical dimension while wielding it. From this moment on, his learning consists of memorizing spells along with incantations, the purpose of which is to emerge their clear images from memories when they are spoken. As well as magical meditation that improves and gives greater control over the user’s connection with the magical dimension so that it responds to his spells, this time drawing mana from himself and not from notes.
Initially, incantations are spoken aloud. At this stage, using them is slower than magical writing. Then, one moves on to silent incantations, spoken in one’s mind. Then the time of casting spells is already comparable. The last stage of learning incantations is directly imagining the spells, bypassing the incantation. The time of casting spells in this way is already much shorter.
Finally, it is time to learn will magic. There is a thin line between incantations without their text and will magic. Learning will magic consists of moving the spells known to the user into the subconscious, so that they can use them unconsciously. This is done again during magical meditations. At this stage, however, the student begins to use mana crystals, which provide him with a strong enough connection with the magical dimension to be able to create his astral personality. Its task is to execute spells from the subconscious, while the magician focuses only on the effects of the spell and their control. At this stage, using magic becomes as intuitive for the user as using his own body.
The advantages of will magic are its speed and precision. However, these advantages come at a huge cost of mana. Casting classic spells with it is almost impossible because they are subject to complications that are very easy to overcome when you have such sensitive control over them. Therefore, almost every spell cast this way is unique in its own way. This uniqueness is most often manifested by adjusting the spell’s flight path to the opponent’s movements. Gaining mastery that allows you to cast a spell this way according to a specific recipe, eliminating its unnecessary costs, is a lesson for almost a lifetime.
Each method of using magic has its advantages and disadvantages, which is why an experienced user will usually use all available and learned methods to optimize their spells.
The advantage of magical writings is that they do not have to be learned by heart but they cannot be forgotten from home and even taken away they can be destroyed or discharged. Incantations, that there is no need to carry magical writings with you but learning them takes a lot of time. Will magic with its unmatched speed and precision can get the magician out of the biggest troubles but is unfortunately very expensive.
…In this way, Hollow learned much more about magic. Magic in which the planet Evi was so poor that no one practiced anything there beyond magical writing and most magic was used only in industry and the broadly understood expansion of civilization.
